New “impulse” on the reprocessing of endoscopes
Only by using a qualified washer-disinfector for endoscopes (RDG-E), standardized reprocessing is possible. Nevertheless, manual reprocessing takes place far too often. Used fluids, contaminated surfaces – e.g. of vats and containers – as well as auxiliary equipment such as brushes and protective clothing are not included in the validation of reprocessing processes. It also lacks at logistics: Frequently, only the ways from the CSSD to the department are validated, but not the ways within the department itself. The current HYGENDA study shows, that – compared to the HYGEA study of 2002 – many structural improvements have been made at hygiene in endoscopy. Nevertheless, complaint rates from 3.4 to 4.9% have occurred in the years from 2005 to 2011. Far too much, because the victims are always the patients. Consequences are – preventable – health-care associated infections.
Suggestions for the dialog on hygiene in endoscopy as well as an overview over the current situation may be found in the eight edition of HygCen’s professional information “Impulse”.
